Get your swagger on

You know those days when you look and feel hotter than jalapenos?

Maybe you got a new haircut and you’re wearing your best boots; you’re unstoppable on those days. See an acquaintance-from-long-ago in the supermarket and you’ll waltz up with swagger, do double-kisses and say, “Darling, call me sometime!”

But what about the other days? You know—the ones when you haven’t done laundry – and you’re forced to wear, let’s say, those high-waisted-saggy-butt jeans or that boxy sweatshirt that doesn’t make you feel like your foxy self?

On those days, you probably pull up your sweatshirt hood and hide behind the soup display. Am I right?

It’s true as toast…when you feel like your best-self, you kick major ass and ooze confidence.

Your attitude/outlook is positive; the world is your oyster. And I bet you’ll see this coming, my little foxes—but the same exact principles are true when it comes to your website and marketing materials. What should I think when I hear your name? Think fast—it’s important!

Today, as a voice over actor, you need to be specialized. Today, you need to say what you do. Because if you don’t tell the world what to think about you—they’ll make it up.

When that happens, you have surrendered the advantage of driving your own career. Why would anyone do that?

Fear not! I won’t let you fall into the shuffle. By building a Bossy Brand, with a business plan, sales and entrepreneurship—people will know what to think when they hear your name.

So, I challenge you to position yourself as, “I do me really well—and there is no other me out there!

The secret is: authenticity is a lot more fun to listen to.

The people who hire you know that. Once you know your authentic brand (which is easy because it’s already in you!), the other half is marketing it really well. It’s not just about being crazy talented—it’s about making sure everyone knows about you.

When you build an authentic, Bossy Brand, it makes everything else easier—from top to bottom.

• the look of your site
• the fonts you use for marketing materials
• the words you chose to describe yourself
• the jobs you audition for
• the events you attend
• like, everything!

Your brand drives everything about your business. And it will enable clients to immediately get you. So they will immediately know what to think!

Know what? They are aspiring to the SAME THING.

To be understood, heard, and to clearly communicate as a brand. When they see that you obviously GET IT, that inspires trust. Being well branded is the way to convert a great audition into a booking.

It begins with YOUR BRAND.

If you don’t tell somebody what to think, they will make it up.

Someone with no brand has zero control over how they are viewed, heard, and perceived. In an industry as competitive as voiceover, that’s a sure-fire way to debilitate a career and sabotage success. On the flip side, someone with a strong brand is able to maneuver the imagination and set the framework for greatness.

With this truth in mind, let’s revisit the basics for a minute. What is a brand?

Seth Godin says, “A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories, and relationships that, taken together, account for a customer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.”

Indeed. The beautiful advantage about voiceover is that YOU ARE YOUR BRAND. It does not need to be INVENTED, it is already there. It just needs to be excavated and polished to reveal a bright & shiny you — and delivered in the right way.

Your assignment is to dig deep and spend some serious time on your brand. Here are a few questions that will help get you started:

    • What makes you unique?
    • What makes your voice talent tick with ‘I GOT THIS’ style, skill & confidence?
    • What do people say about you and your work most often?
    • What brands do you admire and/or see some of your superstar-self in?
    • What are you?
    • What are you not?

Funny, but if you asked me what I wanted to be when I was a kid I always said, “An archaeologist, of course!” And I guess, in a way, I have become one…only I’m unearthing VO brands & industry positioning instead of buried civilizations.

Who really succeeds in this business?


You are smart, entrepreneurial and creative. But, it is the passion that you bring to your work that gets attention.

Passion is essential — it is your passion for this business that will sustain you. But passion alone won’t cut it.

I call this The American Idol syndrome: Everyone says “But, this is my dream!” Yeah, guess what? It’s everyone’s dream. So many people in this business think that being a big believer is what makes them unique.

They say, “I believe more than anyone!” and “THIS is really what I want to do!” and “I’m so passionate!

Passion will keep you going, but it won’t get you the platinum album.

You MUST do the work of positioning yourself so that you can attract the clients who NEED EXACTLY YOU. When you are armed with a rock-solid brand, you are able to leverage your great passion to your advantage!

Want to know who really succeeds in this business?

Here it is: I have watched for more than 25 years and you know who actually makes it? It is the person who is as consistently persistent as they are passionate and doesn’t take no for an answer.

Apply equal parts active passion, bold positioning and tireless persistence (rinse & repeat) and you’re in business — and not just any business, but the kind your big dreams have been screamin’ about all along.

We Are the Lucky Ones


Check out this recent Gallup poll: only 13% of people, worldwide, feel actively engaged by their jobs. We are the lucky ones.

Consider Seth Godin, Daniel Pink, Simon Sinek, and Brene Brown (watch her amazing TED talk), to name just a few, who advocate world-wide on the primacy of the artist, on creativity, and for right-brained thinkers to provide the means for us to create new paradigms so that we may up that percentage, perhaps by example, and pursue lives of meaning.

When we look at how hard we all work, intellectually, would you really choose to be a voice over artist? Thing is, you don’t really have a choice. Voiceover chooses you. It is a calling in your soul.

It is who you are — and your clients, and others like me who get to work with you, feel it. Passion and creativity are inspirational and a blast to be around. I love my job because YOU are all so passionate about yours.

I am constantly amazed at the tenacity in the VO community. In all my years of being a voiceover talent agent and manager, I have rarely run across many VO talent dropouts out there.

But with all that said, to truly compete in this tough business, it isn’t enough just to have the calling. You have to be willing to commit yourself — mind, vocal chords & soul — to the often challenging & difficult work of success.

But there is a method to the madness that will help you get to and stay where you want to be in your career … where you and your VO calling are synergistic, confident and killing it daily…

First, you need a bossy brand that sets you apart from the crowd and tells people what to think of you.

Secondly, you need to have a razor-sharp business plan with unshakable, no excuses follow-through.

Thirdly, think about where you want to be a year from now, and then schedule the steps needed to get there and meet any challenge along the way — voice on!

What’s Your Number?


Shut the front, back and the studio door – it is 2015. Crazy, right? I don’t know about you, but I am seeing a lot of super-ambitious resolutioning out there. I say, first, take a deep breath and a look back at the good, the bad, and the nothin’ special so-so of 2014.

Then, pick a few things to resolve in your VO world that will really make a difference in your career this year.

So, how do you win jobs, connect and start making that difference immediately? By kicking ass on your auditions, that’s how. As you know, it is a numbers game — which, when played right — can make you a winner, time and again.

When I first became a VO agent, you were in or you were out. Today — YOU can build a big career through YOUR efforts and not just sit there waiting for the phone to ring. YOU are in the entrepreneurial driver’s seat, with all the power and responsibility therein. Business 101 rules apply, and I find that thrilling.

Want to be successful in your VO career? First, you need talent. Then, you need a killer brand. And most of all, you need to put the work in.

Today, it’s a numbers game.

What is your number? Here’s the formula:


This exercise is designed for you to take a look at what you’re shooting for. You may need to pull this out of the sky right now—we’re not shooting for 100% accuracy, and this can ALWAYS be tweaked—but you’ll have the formula you need.

Get a piece of paper and answer the following:

  • First: What’s your booking ratio?
  • Next: How much money do you need to make?
  • Now: How much money do you now average per job?

Let’s do the math:

How many auditions do you need to do a day to reach your financial goal?

For instance: If your booking ratio is 1 in 30: Are you willing to do 30 auditions a day to book that one job that you need to meet your number? It’s a simple yes or no question.

You decide. If it’s a “yes,” I’ll let you in on a little secret: The more you audition, the better you get, the more jobs you book and the more money you make (OR, the less you have to work).

Write back and tell me your number. If you know it could be better, then let’s talk about how to blow that number through the roof in 2015.
